Ruthie Scarpino is a clown, director, mask, and circus maker hailing from the wilds of Maine. As an artist and a scholar, she believes art can enrich the human experience beyond entertainment alone, using movement, masks, and physical theatre like a microscope, zooming in to show what is otherwise unseen.
Ruthie's training is diverse. She has a Master's degree in Art for Social Engagement from the Rhode Island School of Design; completed her circus studies under the tutelage of circus greats Gino Farfan and Miguel Caceras; and is an alumni of Le Ecole International de Theatre de Jacques Lecoq. In 2023 she was a professional apprentice under Ivan Bacciochi at Le Ecole International de Mime Corporel Dramatic, the esteemed Corporel Mime Academy in Paris, France.
Ruthie's current work is pushing the limits of the body and physical storytelling. Her work unites her background in Mask, Physical Comedy, and Circus with Corporeal Mime.
Ruthie's physical theatre, clown, and corporeal mime work has graced stages internationally. Since 2020 she has performed in New York City, Paris, New England, Edinburgh, Berlin, and Sarsina. Her specialty is in interactive comedy and physical storytelling; solo or ensemble. Since 2011 Ruthie has collaborated with Hybrid Movement Company, Panto-WHAT!?, Horse Trade Theatre Co., and Compagnie Commedia, gracing notable stages such as The SPACE, New York City Summer Stage, FEAST Fest, La Bienalle des Arts et du Mime du Gest, Clown Slam, and Plautus Festival il festival del Teatro Classico a Sarsina.
Ruthie discovered the art of mask while training at Ecole International de théâtre de Jacques Lecoq. Following her professional training she learned how to build Larval, and expressive masks in Berlin, and worked with companies exploring modern mask theatre. In 2020 she created TOGETHER, ALONE a solo mask piece that created the illusion of an ensemble through infrared technology which premiered at SPLIT Film Festival and was invited to be in residence GlogulAIR in Berlin. In summer 2025 her new mask piece Love at First Flight premiered with Apricot Productions, a mask and comedy piece exploring love and lust through the absurd story of a crow falling in love with a dress. Through object manipulation, comedy, corporeal mime, and mask, Ruthie uses the body to deep dive into this very human experience through the isolation of the face as an expressive tool.
Ruthie is an applied arts activist, using theatre and circus beyond entertainment alone. Since 2024 she has hosted workshops in Embodied Mask, Corporeal Mime, and Character Creation at The Hybrid Movement Lab in Brooklyn. Her workshops have been hosted by LA NAVE at El Calderon Teatro in Valladolid Spain, TACU, Linden Global, and other international theatre and social justice spaces. Her summer workshops in Berlin focus on how puppetry and storytelling could support social and emotional learning for young people on the spectrum, and she is currently collaborating with Linden as an applied arts facilitator. Ruthie has taught workshops and been an artist in residence at The Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, Antioch College, The Fulbright Fellowship, The House of Yes, The Sable Project, La Main Collectif, and The City University of New York with the Creative Arts Team. Ruthies Applied Arts work is diverse and she has worked in schools, prisons, refugee camps, special needs centers, and programs for undocumented children. She collaborates in teams, often with the support of licensed therapists, and learning specialists, bringing together artistic and mental health teams to provide the best support possible.

The Mystery at Ginger Creek
Creator & Performer - Panto-WHAT?!
Welcome to Ginger Creek, where curious characters and perplexing events are the norm. An interactive murder mystery suitable for everyone ages 7 and up!
"This is a thoroughly engaging show. It's well worth taking your kids to and ensuring they won't be passive for an hour. They'll lean forwards, interested in the show, and get into it! It must be difficult to create a mystery and stay on top of it when we are constantly involved as an audience. It requires self-assurance and trust between performers. There's plenty of that on show. Overall this is well worth seeing. A quality story, genuinely interesting, funny, and with plenty to draw us all in. Recommended."

"A really energetic show with two performers playing multiple roles. They encouraged all the young people to participate and our grandchildren had a wonderful time as did we. To be thoroughly recommended."

"You've gotta hand it to anyone who proudly bills their show as 'Interactive Theater.' Most audiences cringe at the thought of an actor breaking the fourth wall and involving them in the story. But 'Panto-What? Theater Company,' somehow pulls it off with their new show, 'The Mystery at Ginger Creek,' creating a fun and inviting atmosphere that any audience would be glad to spend their evening in. I sincerely hope 'Panto-What? Theater Company' will have many chances to give 'The Murder at Ginger Creek' a performance life beyond the Frigid Fest. Some very fun work here!"

"Interactive? I was afraid they'd make me come up on stage and strip, sing and eat a spider. But it wasn't like that. Nothing even came close to violating my supersensitive comfort zone. Go see it. It's clever, funny and fun."

"Ms. Scarpino and Mr. Gargan offer a remarkable experience for their audience, no matter their age. Using festive costume props and stereotypical language, they seamlessly float in and out of their characters making it easy to keep up with the action. They engage the audience (a.k.a. the locals and the detectives) with questions throughout the story which the children (and adults!) seemed to adore."
